The Scope Of The Adolescent Literacy Crisis - 2100 Words

According to the article The Scope of The Adolescent Literacy Crisis, reading and writing skills have not improved much in the last twenty years. Linked Text sets can help to motivate adolescent readers, especially when dealing with classical texts. A text set is defined as five to fifteen texts that relate conceptually in some way shape or form, for example, similar themes, text types, and so on. The purpose of a text set is to reflect different perspectives on the same concept. The teacher needs to consider various criteria in creating the text set. (Mathis, 2002) Using different types of texts helps students to better understand how all the texts are related, which helps them in return to understand the theme, text type, etc. Using Linked Text sets help students to see and understand classical books in a way they did not think about. LTS helps students to fully understand the classical stories. According to Wold, â€Å"The use of Linked Text Sets is one possible way to provide access and opportunities for teen readers to engage in a wide range of texts that include both print and non-print media.
